Exploring & Creating Futures Workshop.

By James Clampett, 18 & 19 January 2023, Leaders for IMPACT Network, Sydney, Australia. Presented in-person and online.

Workshop Intro.

On the 18 & 19 January 2023 insight & foresight delivered two Emerging Change & Trends workshops for the Leaders for IMPACT Network. The workshop introduction was:

How many times have you used data about futures to support your planning and decision-making?

The world is changing constantly. Right now there is a change occurring that could have a significant impact on how your business operates in 5 to 10 years. Are you ready for it?

Foresight is the new forecasting.  It’s the ability to anticipate and prepare for future changes through a combination of emerging change and trend analysis and expert insight. By leveraging foresight, you can make well-informed decisions that will help you anticipate potential opportunities, risks, and developments in your industry before others do.

Foresight helps you identify potential strategies that can help you differentiate yourself from your competitors and secure a competitive advantage. It also helps you make quicker and more informed decisions to help you stay ahead of the competition and maximise potential future opportunities.

Using data about futures can help you stay ahead of the competition, anticipate potential risks or opportunities, and make informed decisions that will help your business grow across a range of futures. Investing the time and resources to understand how emerging changes could impact your organisation tomorrow is essential for long-term success. With foresight, you can be ready for what happens next.

In January 2023 the Leaders for IMPACT Network, will explore the art of foresight and get some insight into how you can use futures data in their planning and decision-making.

Workshop format.

Pre-workshop.

In the leadup up to the workshop insight & foresight used the Futures Platform™ to identify 5 sectors and 49 phenomena of emerging change and trends that could have a significant impact on the futures of the members of the Leaders for IMPACT Network. The 5 sectors explored where:

  • Values & Ethics.

  • Science & Technology.

  • Global Economy.

  • Work Organisation.

  • Knowledge Relationship.

Members had access to a custom landing page on the insight & foresight website that detailed all the sectors and phenomena and allowed the workshop participants to explore them in their own time.

Workshop.

On the day the workshop was opened with a short presentation on foresight before participants were divided into 5 groups. Each group was given one of the sectors and 10 phenomena to explore using a table mat and dice process. An example of the table mat used is shown below.

An example of a table mat used in an insight & foresight workshop to facilitate discussion on emerging change and trends.

Participants rolled a 6 sided dice and were asked to reflect on the change that could occur as a result of the emerging change and trends ask one of the following questions:

  • Risk - what is a risk this change could bring?

  • Opportunity - what is an opportunity this change could present?

  • Disruption - how could this change disrupt your current plans?

  • Adaption - how could you adapt your current plans if change occurs?

  • Exploit - what could you do to exploit this change?
